In order to increase access of information to students outside of our program, Arkansas Commitment’s new After School Club will provide college admissions workshops at local area high schools. These workshops are open to any student with a strong desire to attend a 4-year college or university after high school. While these workshops are geared towards high-achieving students with a strong desire to attend a 4-year college or university after high school, all students in grades 9th-11th at Bryant High School are welcomed to participate.

This program will focus on teaching students key areas of the College Admissions process, including but not limited to:

Holistic Admissions

Students will gain an understanding of the “Holistic Admissions Review” used by highly selective colleges and universities. Through this workshop, students will learn what elements of the application stand-out under this form of review and how these sections are weighed under this review process.

Curriculum Selection

Arkansas Commitment will assist students in selecting the right courses to make their applications stand out in an highly selective admissions pool.

Admissions Case Studies

Students will assume the role of an admissions counselor by reviewing 4 mock applications. Students will be given the task of admitting 1 student, waitlisting 1 student, and denying 2 students – simulating the admissions review process for highly-selective colleges with an admit rate of 25% or less.

This activity will reinforce key concepts introduced during the “Holistic Admissions” workshop.

Need-based Financial Aid

Students will learn about the relatively new form of Financial Aid and how institutions are increasing access to low-income, first-generation, and traditionally underrepresented students.

Students will learn about the Net Price Calculator and how private institutions practicing “Need Based” financial aid may be cheaper than many in-state options.

Essay Writing Brainstorming Workshop

Students will learn the basics of the college essay process. Students will learn how to pinpoint key values, characteristics, and values that will allow students to produce a unique essay that will properly tell their story to college admissions counselors
